# How Do Google Ads Rules Apply to Eating Disorder Treatment?

Reviewed October 6, 2026 · By Michael Borgia, MedScale Health

## Short answer

As of October 2026, Google does not treat eating disorder treatment as an addiction service. Its addiction services policy covers recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services only, so an eating disorder program needs no certification for Search ads unless it also promotes drug and alcohol treatment or prescribes online. Eating disorders are health content, so remarketing, customer match and lookalikes are off. MedScale Health, a paid acquisition agency for telehealth brands and clinics, runs these accounts on search intent.

## What this means for you

- Google's addiction services policy covers recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services only. Eating disorder treatment is not one of them.
- An eating disorder program needs no LegitScript or Google certification for Search ads, unless it also promotes drug and alcohol treatment or prescribes online.
- Eating disorders are mental health conditions, which Google treats as sensitive health content. Remarketing, customer match and lookalikes are off.
- People under 18 are not eligible for personalized ads, so adolescent programs reach parents through search.
- Ad copy names the program and its levels of care, never the reader's eating or body.

MedScale Health, a paid acquisition agency for telehealth brands and clinics, runs Google Ads for eating disorder treatment programs, from outpatient practices to residential centers. This page answers the classification question first, then covers audiences, keywords, copy and tracking. This page is marketing guidance, not medical or legal advice. Platform policies change, so check the sources listed at the end before acting on a specific rule.

## How Google classifies eating disorder treatment

We read Google's policy pages on October 5, 2026. The Healthcare and Medicines policy restricts prescription drug services, prescription drug terms, unapproved substances, prescription opioid painkillers, speculative and experimental treatments, clinical trial recruitment, addiction services and a few other categories. Eating disorder treatment is not named in any of them.

The addiction services policy is specific. Google restricts the promotion of recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services, and says services unrelated to drug and alcohol addiction, like services for impulse control disorders, behavioral addiction or nicotine addiction, are out of scope. Eating disorder treatment is not drug or alcohol addiction treatment, so it falls outside that certification.

Where Google does place it is health. The personalized advertising policy defines health content to include physical or mental health conditions. That classification decides your audiences, covered below.

## When certification does apply

- Co-occurring substance use. If the program's ads or pages promote drug or alcohol addiction treatment, the addiction services policy applies, and in the US that needs LegitScript Addiction Treatment Certification plus Google certification. LegitScript says addiction treatment provided as part of a co-occurring program qualifies.
- Online prescribing. A telehealth program that facilitates prescribing is a prescription drug service under Google's policy, and US telemedicine providers need LegitScript Healthcare Merchant Certification and Google certification.
- Drug names as keywords. In the US, prescription drug terms can appear in ads and landing pages without certification, but keyword-targeting them needs certification.

A program with an addiction line runs it as its own campaign on its own page, so the eating disorder campaigns run while certification is pending.

## Audiences: search intent does the work

Advertisers promoting in a sensitive interest category can't use advertiser-curated audiences: customer match, your data segments (remarketing) and lookalike segments. Predefined Google audiences such as in-market and affinity segments remain available. Users under 18 are not eligible for personalized advertising of any kind, and Google notes that Demand Gen campaigns use advertiser-curated audiences by default and may be restricted in sensitive categories.

For an adolescent program, that means no list of parents who visited the teen program page and no upload of past families. The parent finds the program by searching, so the keyword list carries the account.

## Keyword themes

- Treatment and place: "eating disorder treatment near me", "eating disorder treatment center" plus a city or state.
- Condition and care: "anorexia treatment", "bulimia treatment", "binge eating disorder treatment", "ARFID treatment".
- Level of care: "eating disorder IOP", "eating disorder PHP", "residential eating disorder treatment".
- Family and age: "eating disorder treatment for teens", "family-based treatment" plus a city.
- Coverage: "eating disorder treatment covered by" plus a plan name, for plans the program accepts.

Add negatives for job, training, statistics and research searches. Condition and treatment terms are not prescription drug terms, and Google's healthcare policy has no restricted category for eating disorder care, so these keywords need no certification.

## Ad copy and landing pages

- Name the program: "Eating disorder treatment with therapists, dietitians and physicians on one team."
- Name levels of care and next steps: "Outpatient, IOP and PHP programs. Insurance verified before your first visit."
- Leave out weights, sizes, food rules and body imagery. That is MedScale's own rule for this category, not a quoted Google policy.
- Put the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on every page, and tell anyone in immediate danger to call emergency services.

If the program also runs Meta, the personal attributes rule applies there, and Meta's own example list shows "Bulimia counseling available" as an acceptable ad. Meta also bars ads that imply knowledge of the medical information of a viewer's family, so "Is your daughter skipping meals?" fails where "Eating disorder care for teens and families" passes.

## Tracking

Google's personalized advertising policy bars sharing personally identifiable information through data segment tags. A page path such as /anorexia-treatment-for-teens, passed to an ad platform with a conversion, says more than any platform should hold. MedScale tracks server-side under a BAA with neutral event names, and no names, emails, phone numbers, IP addresses or browser IDs go to any ad platform.

## What MedScale does

MedScale Health manages Google Ads for eating disorder programs: keyword lists by level of care and location, negatives for research and job searches, ads and landing pages that describe the program, server-side tracking of booked assessments, and weekly reporting by program. Where a dual diagnosis line needs LegitScript, MedScale's certification help runs the filing. No approval or result is guaranteed. Start with the free growth audit at medscale.health/audit.

## FAQ

**Is eating disorder treatment an addiction service under Google Ads policy?**

No. Google's addiction services policy covers recovery-oriented drug and alcohol addiction services. It names impulse control disorders, behavioral addiction and nicotine addiction as out of scope, and eating disorder treatment is not drug or alcohol treatment.

**Does an eating disorder program need LegitScript to run Google Ads?**

Not for the eating disorder program itself. It needs LegitScript and Google certification if its ads promote drug or alcohol addiction treatment, or if it prescribes medication online as a telemedicine provider.

**Can we remarket to parents who visited our adolescent program page?**

No. Eating disorder treatment is health content under Google's personalized advertising policy, so customer match, remarketing lists and lookalike segments are off. Parents reach the program through search, which is why the keyword list carries the account.

**Can we bid on keywords like anorexia treatment and bulimia treatment?**

Yes. Condition and treatment terms are not prescription drug terms, and Google's healthcare policy has no restricted category for eating disorder care. Write the ad about the program and its levels of care, not about the reader.

**What does Google Ads management for an eating disorder program include?**

Keyword lists by level of care and location, negatives for research and job searches, ads and landing pages that describe the program, server-side tracking of booked assessments, and weekly reporting by program. Approval and results are never guaranteed.
